For the thousands of diehard University of Texas Longhorn football fans, Darrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium is the most important landmark in Austin, if not all of Texas. Built in 1924, the stadium was re-named in 1996 in honor of the University of Texas' former football coach, who brought the school eleven Southwest Conference titles and three national championships during his career. In the last ten years, the Darrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium has undergone numerous renovations. In the summer of 2009 the university finished its latest stadium project, adding over four thousand bleachers. As the largest football stadium in Texas and all of the South, its capacity exceeds one hundred thousand seats. After the 2005 season, an $8 million dollar audio/visual improvement project was undertaken. As a result, the stadium now boasts a High Definition LED scoreboard. Whether one is a UT fan or just a visitor to the Austin area, the Darrell K Royal Texas Memorial Stadium is certainly a must-see on any tour!
