Dat So La Lee House

Hotels near Dat So La Lee House, Carson City, United States .

Perhaps the most famous Washoe Indian basket weaver in American History, Dat So La Lee was born about 25 miles south of present day Carson City, Nevada in the middle 1800s. While her name is not widely known outside of the artistic community, by the time she had moved to Carson City in 1895, Dat So La Lee had mastered her craft to the point that she was internationally recognized, with her baskets were being sold for thousands of dollars by the early 1900s. Today her work can be found in the Smithsonian Museum of National History in Washington, D.C.

Upon moving to Carson City, Dat So La Lee approached store owner Abe Cohn to sell some of her small baskets. So taken by the quality of her work, Cohn became Dat So La Lees primary benefactor and promoter, building a small house for her in 1914. This house, now known as The Dat So La Lee House, is located at 331 West Proctor Street in Carson City, just two blocks from the Nevada State Capitol, and is where she made the majority of the baskets now seen in museums all over the world.

The Dat So La Lee House is now a private residence, therefore closed to the public. However, due to its central location in Carson City, the house makes for an easy additional destination when visiting the State Capitol building. Local hotel accommodations include the Nugget Hotel in Carson City, Best Western Trailside Inn Motel, Best Western Carson Station, and the Plaza Hotel. For more information, visit .
