De Kleine Komedie
De Kleine Komedie is the oldest theatre in Amsterdam, located in the heart of the city on the banks of the Amstel River and around the corner from the Rembrandtplein. With a capacity of 500 seats De Kleine Komedie has an unrivaled reputation for producing theatre of the highest quality which largely consists of cabaret/comedy, music shows and musical theatre.
It was originally called the Theatre Français as in 1786, the theatre's inagural year,, performances were often in French and modeled on a Parisian theater form.
In 1784 Henry Hope of Hope & Co purchased ground on the Amstel near the east side of the Halvemaansteeg in Amsterdam together with other very influential men of Amsterdam who had far reaching connections. The theatre was built in 1986 and Henry Hope took over the running of the establishment until he fled the country before Napoleon's army in 1794.
Napoleon himself supported the Theatre Francais, and French opera's and plays were shown in the theatre well into the 19th century. Today the program is primarily in Dutch
Today the Kleine Komedie offers a stage for both upcoming and established Dutch talents and is the nation's premier cabaret stage, though it also offers a wide range of musical acts. Extremely popular with locals, it's one of the most character-full theatrical venues in Amsterdam. The theater has state-of-the-art sound and light equipment. Locals frequent the place to enjoy the theatrical performances, so visitors should book in advance to avoid last minute rush.
