Deep Eddy Pool

Hotels near Deep Eddy Pool, Austin, United States .

In sweaty Austin, being able to go for a swim is a must. Deep Eddy Pool, the oldest swimming pool in Texas, has been offering city slickers a welcome break from the heat for almost a hundred years. Originally a swimming hole fed directly from some of the city's cold springs, the land was turned into a concrete pool in 1915. Over the years, it's housed a number of interesting attractions, including a diving baby and a world-famous diving horse.

Now, the pool just houses diving humans, most of them taking a break from their daily city lives. There's a wading pool for children as well as a lap pool, and the water stays warm until November (the swimming season begins in February). In addition to swimming, there's summer movie nights, where swimmers, waders, and people who don't feel like hopping in the pool can enjoy a movie under the stars. Past films have included Journey to the Center of the Earth, Willy Wonka, and Indiana Jones. The city is also working to restore the Deep Eddy Bathhouse, which was built during the Depression.

Located in the center of downtown Austin, the pool is open during daylight hours, except during the movie showings, from February until November. It's a short walk from all of the downtown hotels and inns, including The Sheraton, The Hilton, and The Doubletree.
