Deep Ellum

Hotels near Deep Ellum, Dallas, United States .

At one time, the second home of the Model T, Deep Ellum is a neighborhood of east Dallas, Texas famous as an art and entertainment district. The name itself comes from the term “Deep Elm Street”, eventually shortened to Deep Ellum based on the local accent. Deep Ellum has been a music hotspot since at least 1920, when jazz and blues legends such as Robert Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson began playing in the music clubs of the neighborhood.

The area, which is bounded by Highway 75 and Exposition Avenue to the west and east, and Elm Street and Canton Street to the north and south, gradually transformed into an industrial and warehouse district by the 60’s and 70’s. With the arrival of the punk music scene in the late 70’s, Deep Ellum began another transformation back to an entertainment district, and by the 1990s, was a hugely popular neighborhood of Dallas, hosting festivals such as the Deep Ellum Film Festival and Deep Ellum Arts Festivals.

Today the fortunes of Deep Ellum continue their tradition of constant change, having reversed paths somewhat from the high point of the 1990s, with some Dallas residents questioning the safety of the area. However, the district continues to serve as home to a number of music clubs, bars, art galleries, and restaurants. Local hotel accommodations include the Hotel Indigo Dallas Downtown, the Wilson Carriage House, and Sheraton Dallas Hotel.
