Put together in 1993 by a group of students attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the Defiant Theater troupe was an experimental and daring theater company that was received with critical acclaim in and around the Chicago area. Famous for their original productions such as "Action Movie: the Play" and "Godbaby," the company also was complimented for its productions of classics by Shakespeare all the way through Alfred Jarry. The Defiant Theater group received the distinction of "Best Experimental Theater" from the Chicago Magazine in 1999, due to their incredible simulated fighting sequences and creative stagecraft. However, by 2004 the troupe had come to its end and was ultimately disbanded by its members. The theater where they used to perform, at 3540 North Southport Avenue, continues to operate.
