Delft University of Technology is one of Netherlands largest technical university located in Delft. It offers education to more than fifteen thousands students with over two thousands staff serving as teachers and other 1,800 serving as management and support staff for the university. Additionally it’s a member of IDEA League and was regarded as second – best university of Technology in Europe by the Times Higher Education ranking system.

King Willem II founded the Royal Academy on 8th January, 1842 which provided education for civil engineers who served both industry and nation. However a royal decree issued on June 20th, 1864 disbanded the Academy and led to the formation of Polytechnic School. This school educated future engineers and architects involved in civil works, mining, ship building and mechanical engineering.

On the 22nd May, 1905 the school was acknowledged for its technical education and was renamed the Institute of Technology and later - in June 1956 - it was granted the corporate rights in accordance to an act which was implemented on September 1st, 1986. It was once again renamed the Delft University of Technology or simply TU Delft.

Originally the university buildings were located in Delft’s city centre, but then it was relocated to Mekelpark on September 12th, 2006 and started the construction work which is due to completion in 2009.The university has eight faculties and imparts numerous programs in Graduate & Undergraduate programs.

The universities renowned alumni are Ad Bax, Jacobus Van’t Hoff, Winy Maas, Bernard Tellegen, Gerard Philips and Kas Oosterhuis.
