Established in 1889 by Joseph Cotton Dana, then City Librarian, the Denver Public Library has grown considerably, and today holds over 2,000,000 items in its collection with 22 branches, and a bookmobile. A new Central Library building was acquired in 1910 funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, and later moved to its current and final location in 1956 when the city commissioned a new structure to be built. Today its Western History collection is internationally recognized for its excellence as is its Genealogy department, and the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library.

The Central Library is open Mondays and Tuesdays from 10am to 8pm, Wednesday through Friday from 10am to 6pm, 9am to 5pm Saturdays, and 1pm to 5pm Sundays. Be sure not to skip the Denver Art Museum next door when visiting the Denver Public Library, as well as other downtown attractions like the 16th Street Mall, Larimer Square, and the Denver Botanic Gardens.
