Since 1948, the museum at the Des Moines Art Center of Des Moines, Iowa has provided both locals and visitors alike with painting, indoor and outdoor sculpture, modern, and mixed media art. The permanent collection displays notable artists such as Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse, Georgia O’Keeffee, and Mary Cassatt. A large exhibit hall is also reserved for rotating exhibits which change several times throughout the year. The museum’s architecture itself is a work of art, with one wing an Art Nouveau/Art Deco design by Eliel Saarinen, completed in 1948; the sculpture portion is of a Modernist design, created by I.M. Pei (1968); and the third wing designed by Richard Meier (1985). A reference library, restaurant and a gift shop are all part of the Des Moines Art Center, which also hosts regular workshops and seminars. Museum admission is free, and the Art Center is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 11am to 4pm, Thursday from 11am to 9pm, Saturday from 10am to 4pm, and Sunday from noon to 4pm.
