Along the Des Moines River of Des Moines, Iowa, find the 14 acre Des Moines Botanical and Environmental Center. Grown from a mere greenhouse in 1939, today’s Botanical Center was completed in 1979. The Botanical Center features both tropical and sub-tropical plants all together under a geodesic dome, alongside aquatic species like koi, and turtles, as well as non-caged birds. The geodesic dome is accompanied by a variety of seasonal, outdoor gardens. The Des Moines Botanical and Environmental Center is open from 10am to 5pm 7 days a week. Admissions are free for guest under five, $2 for students, kids and seniors 65+, and $4 for adults, with dome tours available. Stop in for a quick bite at the Riverwalk Café for lunch from 11am to 2pm Monday through Saturday when visiting the Center.
