The concept for the Des Moines Public Library, Des Moines, Iowa, was first realized in 1866, but as the Des Moines Library Association. The former home of the library was the basement of a Methodist Church. Bought by the city in 1882, the library became public, and a new home was built by the river in October of 1903. Some special collections housed by the Des Moines Public Library include a United States Government Document Depository, the Iowa Collection- concerning Iowa’s history and culture, the Foundation Center- maintaining data and an online resource of active U.S. foundations and grants, and the Shoah Visual History Collection- featuring testimonials by Holocaust survivors and other witnesses. Set in the heart of downtown, the library features an all glass roof. Guests are able to read while taking in the Des Moines skyline! Visit the Central Library on Grand Avenue in Des Moines from 9am to 8pm Monday through Wednesday, 9am to 6pm Thursdays and Fridays, 9am to 5pm Saturday, and 1pm to 5pm Sundays.
