The Design Museum's foundations go back to 1873 when the idea was born as a study collection for the arts and crafts school. Today, collections in the museum say so much more. Aside from showing the history and development of Finnish design, the building contains over 35,000 objects, 40,000 drawings, 100,000 images, and represents over 1,000 designers.

The building alone is impressive. The Design Museum moved to its present location in 1978, a structure designed in 1894 by architect Gustaf Nystrom.

During summer months, the Design Museum's doors stay open from 11AM to 6PM daily. Throughout the rest of the year, the museum is open Tuesdays from 11AM to 8PM and Wednesday through Sunday from 11AM to 6PM. Admission costs 8€ per adult. Visitors can reach the Design Museum by taking Bus 16 or Tram 10.
