Detroit Opera House

Hotels near Detroit Opera House, Detroit, United States .

Travelers might think of auto plants and American spirit when Detroit comes to mind, but it's entirely possible that another huge part of the city's tradition won't be the first thing you think. That part? Opera, of course.

Ever since the 1800s, there's been opera in Detroit, and in a dizzying number of venues, too. From The Old Detroit Opera House to The Whitney Grand Opera Theatre, there has always been a place to see good opera while in Detroit.

Detroit's currently operating opera house, The Detroit Opera House, is located on Broadway Street. The building was constructed by renowned architect C. Howard Crane, famous for his ability to create spaces ideal for musical performance. Crane also designed the orchestra hall and a variety of theaters around town.

Originally known as The Capitol Theatre, The Detroit Opera House was built in 1922. It's undergone a number of name changes, but one fact remains: when it opened in the 1920s, it was the fourth-largest theater in the entire world. More than just famous operas have graced its stage; a number of important jazz musicians also performed at The Detroit Opera House, including legends Duke Ellington and Luis Armstrong.

The building has been closed, reopened, and restored during its busy history more times than the citizens of Detroit can keep track of. In 1996, The Detroit Opera House reopened after its most extensive restoration yet. Since then, a number of important operas, as well as other musical events and dance productions, have taken place on a regular basis. The selections for both dance and opera are diverse, wit productions of The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Tosca, and Nabucco gracing the stage.

The best way to figure out what hours The Detroit Opera House will be open when you're in town is to check with the official website, which offers a comprehensive look at both the dance and opera seasons, as well as the prices. The theater's location in Detroit's historical district means a number of hotels are nearby, including The Radisson Riverfront Hotel Windsor, The Hilton Windsor, and The Comfort Suites Downtown.
