The Detroit Science Center was founded in 1970 by the philanthropist/businessman Dexter Ferry and underwent an extensive expansion in 2001 which nearly doubled its exhibit space. The hands-on museum is the home to Michigan’s only IMAX Dome Theatre and also features the Dassault Systemes Planetarium. The Detroit Science Center’s mission is to inspire visitors to pursue and support careers and studies in engineering, technology and science.

The museum is located in Detroit’s Midtown Cultural Center, also the site of the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. The Midtown area of Detroit is also home to Wayne State University. Hotels in the area include the Inn on Ferry Street, Hotel St.Regis, and the MotorCity Casino Hotel.

General museum admission for adults is $13.95, and children 12 and under are $11.95. Admission fee includes museum exhibits, Planetarium shows and one IMAX show. Special exhibits are accessible for an additional fee.
