The Bartolomeu Dias museum was formerly Mossel Bay Museum, which was developed during the 1960s. Later, the name changed to Post Tree Museum until it became Bartolomeu Dias museum.

Most of the buildings that are found within the museum grounds are already old, built during the early 1830s until 1900s. It is opposite the Indian Ocean and is situated right at the grounds here the first European settlers trade and established relationships with the natives. The information you need about its colourful history is found in the maritime division of the museum.

The museum opens from Mondays to Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. It is also open during public holidays, except Good Friday and Christmas, and weekends from 9 a.m. until 5:45 p.m.

In the museum, you can find Bartolomeu Dias’s life-sized caravel replica, as well as an aquarium and a shell museum. You can also catch a glimpse of 5-century-old post office tree and the botanical gardens.
