Diergaarde Blijdorp is a zoo located in the northwestern part of Rotterdam, one of the oldest zoos in the Netherlands. In 2007 it celebrated 150 years of existance.
The original Rotterdam zoo was lost during the bombing of Rotterdam in World War II. It destroyed most of the city centre along with thw zoo. Some streetnames, such as Diergaardesingel still recall the old zoo. Blijdorp was rebuilt slightly to the north, where it opened to the public in its current location on December 7, 1940. The new zoo was designed by Dutch architect Sybold van Ravesteyn. He designed the central railway station in Rotterdam, as well. In 2001, “Blijdorp” became almost twice as large when it opened a new western part, called Oceanium, with main attraction- an aquarium. In April 2004, Diergaarde Blijdorp was declared a national monument.
Dive into the fully covered Oceanium and make a magical voyage over the bottom of the sea and along coastal regions. Animal lovers will by surprised by many marine and coastal inhabitants such as fish (from herring to sharks), playful seaotters, puffins, snakes and a large group of king penguins.
Blijdorp not only participates in animal programmes like EEP, it also houses a botanical garden and manages the Dutch National Bromelia Collection.
Visitor numbers reach around 1.5 million people a year.
Rotterdam Zoo has 2 entrances. The Riviera Hall entrance is very close to the Rotterdam Central Station. It takes a 12 minutes' walk, or take bus service 40, 44 or 49 or bus service 33 to the Oceanium entrance.
