One of the most popular ways to get around the central part of The United States is by train. It's been that way since people first moved to the area, and even in a time of rapid cross-country flights, there' still something soothing and efficient about watching the billboard-free land go by from the window of a train.

The Dodge City Amtrak Station was originally built by The Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway back in 1896, and was used for passengers from the very beginning. The station was added to The National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Currently, restoration is a huge focus, with the station not just serving as a stopping place for Amtrak, but also operating as a theater and community center for the town of Dodge City.

Amtrak's Southwest Chief line provides a couple of trains daily heading either in the direction of Los Angeles or Chicago. The station doesn't have a ticket office, so be sure to get tickets beforehand. There is, however, a waiting area.

Located in the old downtown, Dodge City Amtrak Station is open daily from midnight until 12:45am, from 5:15am until 6:15am, and from 11:45pm until midnight, depending on if there's a late train scheduled.
