Dolmabahçe Palace

Hotels near Dolmabahçe Palace, Istanbul, Turkey .

When traveling to Istanbul, Turkey, a visit to the Dolmabahce Palace might be on the list of places to see. What is known as one of the most important historic places in the city sprawls out 600 meters along the Bosphorus, making it easy to see why many flock to its façade.

Built between 1843 and 1856 by Karabet Balyan, the Dolmabahce Palace opens its doors to visitors looking to see how Sultans lived during the late Ottoman Empire. The last of Ottoman Sultans all resided here starting with Sultan Abdülmecit I who commissioned the construction of the palace.

The Dolmabahce Palace exemplifies classic Turkish architecture with its brick wall interiors, stone wall exterior and timber floors. However, the palace has its own claims of being excessively ornate, as it was a true example of the power and richness the Sultans had in Turkey. The construction cost 5 million Ottoman gold pounds. Today, that would equal 35 tons of gold. The Palace is remarkably expansive, made up of 285 rooms, 46 halls, 6 Turkish baths, 1427 windows, and 68 toilets.

One of the many interesting facts about the Dolmabahce could be in regards to Supreme leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who occupied a small room in the Palace. He passed away inside the structure on November 10, 1938 at 9:05. All of the clocks in the palace are stopped at this time.

Travelers can visit the Dolmabahce in Istanbul daily between 9AM and 4PM with the exception of Mondays and Thursdays.
