Dome of the Rock is a significant monument, located within the Old City of Jerusalem, erected on the place believed to be the most sacred spot among Jews and Muslims. This dominant structure in Temple Mount houses the Foundation Stone, a holy relic for the Islamic people said to be the rock from which the world was created.

The oldest shrine in Islamic history, the Dome of the Rock boasts architectural features in and outside of the magnificent edifice. Built by Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan in 638 AD, the structure is adorned with intricate mosaics inside and Turkish tile work on the exteriors. The dome, although no longer made of pure gold, is a stunning piece of Byzantine architecture fashioned out of aluminum embellished with gold leaf.

Its location within the old city walls of Jerusalem puts the Dome in the roster of landmarks with great historical significance. The Old City is composed of four quarters filled with religious antiquities and monuments. The Christian, Islamic, Armenian and Jewish sects share space in what perhaps is the most treasured section of Jerusalem, if not, the whole of Israel.

To explore more of the Dome of the Rock and its surrounding sights, head for the shrine between 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Temple of Mount, however, is closed during Fridays and Muslim holidays. Admission price of NIS38 pays for three attractions including the Dome, the Islamic Museum and Al Aqsa Mosque.
