Domus Aurea

Hotels near Domus Aurea, Venice (ROME), Italy .

Some of the most opulent residences were created by some of the most vain Emperors of Rome. Emperor Nero may take the cake on opulence with his Domus Aurea in Rome, Italy

Constructed in 64AD after the fire that destroyed Rome, Emperor Nero left no extravagance out of the Domus Aurea, or the golden house as it is referred. Nero's house contained banqueting rooms, bath houses, gardens, terraces, complex fountains, and even hot and cold running water. The façade was entirely coated in solid gold, with even a room where visitors were showered in flower petals and perfumes upon entering.

With Nero's suicide in 68AD, Emperor Vespasian tore down parts of the Domus Aurea. It was not until the Renaissance that renowned painters like Raphael and Ghirlandaio rediscovered the infamous home for its art.

While the site has been closed since December 2006 due to flooding and restorations, visitors can check to see if Domus Aurea has reopened for tours. When it does, the site is open from 9AM to 7:45PM with 10 people emitted at a time. Tours descend to the Octagonal Room, a domed salon with frescoes down in an underground chamber.

Tour goers must make a reservation in advance. It is also advised to wear a coat even during a summer visit, as it is extremely cold down in the chambers anytime of year.
