Dongzhimen is an important interchange line in Beijing metro’s Line 2, 13 and the Airport Express. Not only is it a subway stop, but a central transport hub for buses as well with the terminal of long-haul buses just outside the station. Dongzhimen served as one of the gateways of Beijing’s old city walls and was built in the Yuan dynasty, during which it was called Chongrenmen.

It was in the onset of the Ming dynasty that Dongzhimen earned its current name. Modern times has seen this subway stop as congested with human traffic as large numbers of people take the subway or the bus from this point. Thus, it is considered to be central Beijing today.

The area itself has not given in to mass urbanization, with the relaxing presence of verdant parks and vibrant trees. Dongzhimen sees a flurry of diverse cultures, from students to professionals, from street peddlers to foreign diplomats. Dongzhimen is also associated with the popular food street, Gui Jie, and the entertainment node of Sanlitun, located in an embassy street filled with bars and restaurants.

Popular hotels near Dongzhimen station include the many courtyard style hotels such as Alley Garden and Ban Qiao and chains like Radisson SAS and Swissotel. First train heading towards Xizhimen is at 5:33 a.m. and the last train is at 10:42 p.m. Beijing Metro has a flat rate fare of RMB2 regardless of destination.
