The Donizetti Theatre, one of Italy's best-known spaces for traditional opera is situated in Bergamo, a city 50 km east of Milan, which was the birthplace of Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). Formed in 1791, it was renamed after the composer in 1897 to celebrate the centenary of his birth.

The Donizetti Theatre in Bergamo is proud of having the richest tradition in Lombardy after „La Scala”. Another feature also distinguishes it: it was the first theatre to be built in brick in Bergamo and one of the first in the whole of Italy, apart from La Scala, the others being practically all built of wood. It is also one of the most spacious theatre halls in the Italian peninsula.

The Donizetti came into being in the eighteenth century but under a different name though, that of Riccardi, the man who built it.

Well regarded for its productions, it also offers a first rate programme which includes – as well as the opera season – a drama season, operetta and ballet season, the Festival Bergamo Jazz, concerts of modern singers, symphonic concerts and the prestigious Festival Pianistico Internazionale.
There is a garden beside the theatre that displays a monument to Donizetti.
