The largest, most famous Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral, the Dormition of the Theotokos Cathedral in Varna in 1886. The name memorializes Russian empress consort Maria Alexandrovna, aunt of the Bulgarian knyaz Alexander. Designed by an Odessan architect named Maas, the cathedral was built by Yanko Kostandi and Gencho Kanchev. A belfry standing 125 feet high was built in the 1940s, when murals and chandeliers were also installed. In the 1960s, painted windows were installed. The copper domes and facade were renovated in 2000.

Today the cathedral is considered to be a Bulgarian cultural monument. It has been modified to allow access by disabled persons.
