This flat,18-hole parkland course, only 5 km out of Cork, was first opened in 1910 and credited for the boom in golf's popularity in the city. However, the clubhouse burnt down in 1921, and all records were lost in the flames. With the help of the community and several committed professional golfers, however, the club reopened in 1925 and has flourished ever since, taking a prominent place among the finest golf clubs in Ireland. Douglas Golf Club has a reputation for being friendly, though ladies and men often have separate golfing events and competitions. Besides golf, however, the club regularly hosts social events such as card games, holiday balls and musical productions. The dress code is fairly strict. Leisure suits, tracksuits, collarless shirts, tank tops, garments displaying slogans, and running shoes are not allowed on the track. Knee socks or sport socks must be worn with tailored shorts. Rules are more relaxed in the clubhouse, but see website for more details. An excellent restaurant and bar and a pro shop are available on site. Bookings should be made in advance, and can be done online. The cost is €45 on a weekday (with a member: €22). Weekend fees are €50 (with a member: €22). Groups of 20 or more pay €40 each.
