One of the oldest buildings in Dresden, Germany, Dresden Castle (also called Residenzschloss Dresden) is located in the heart of the city and contains a variety of architectural styles, including Baroque, Renaissance and Romanesque. Built in 1200 in the Romanesque style, the Renaissance features were added in the 1500s. Following a fire in 1701, the Baroque style was used to rebuild part of the castle.

In 1945, most of the castle was destroyed in World War II; however, the art collections it housed survived as they had been moved elsewhere at the beginning of the war. Reconstruction of the damaged parts of the castle took place in the 1960s, and has been continuing ever since. Museums of the Dresden State Art Collections are gradually returning to the castle and are being put on display to the public.The Crown Jewels, Coin Museum and Copperplate Engraving Collection will move to the palace when renovations are finished. The Dresdner Staatschauspiel ensemble performs in the castle's chapel.

Today, Dresden Castle and the area surrounding it is popular with tourists, not only for its history and beauty but for the fine restaurants and hotels nearby. Known as the Kultur Quartier, the area manifests wide cultural diversity.

The castle is open to the public from April through October, Wednesdays through Mondays from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. Admission fees are $15 for adults.
