The Drottningholm Castle

The Drottningholm Castle is a grand castle belonging to the Royal Family in Sweden. Combining a mixture of styles and influences, the front is modelled after the Palace of Versailles.

Drottningsholm Castel is situated about 10km west of Stockholm and is the home of the Swedish Royal family. The baroque style construction is also known as the "Versailles of the North," and it has also been designated as a World Heritage Site.

The first castle of Drottningholm was built during late 16'th century, by King Johan III to his queen Katarina. The castle was built on an island in the stream, giving the name of Drottningholm (Drottning=queen , holm=island).

The first castle burned down completely on the 30th of December 1661. After the destructive fire the Swedish architect Nicodemus Tessin, got the mission to errect a new castle for the queen.
The Castle was used as a residence for the queen at a comfortable distance from the capital. During the years after, the castle remained a "queens" castle for many queens until 1777 when the Swedish government bought it as a residence for king Gustav III. The castle has a French garden, built in the 17th century and an English park built around 1770.

Since 1981, Drottningholm is the home of the Swedish royal family but is also partially open to the public. It is also possible to visit the Chinese Pavillion (Kina Slott), situated in the back of the large well-maintained garden.
