Drumlane Abbey, or Drumlane Monastery, part of an Augustinian abbey foundation, is located next to the village of Milltown, county of Cavan, Ireland.

In Gaelic, Drumlane (Droim Letathain) means “the broad ridge/hill.” Indeed, there are many small drumlins (hills) surrounding the Abbey, in addition to small lakes. Drumlane sits between two beautiful lakes: Drumlane and Derrybrick. This makes the area picturesque and relaxing, and a favorite spot for locals and tourists for quiet reflection.

Besides the Abbey/Monastery, the location also houses the Church and Round Tower of Drumlane, both dating back to 555. A monastery was founded here in the sixth century, by Saint Edan, Bishop of Ferns. This became subject to the abbey of St. Mary at Kells.

The Round Tower at Drumlane is made of limestone and red clay and stands beside the church. It is the only tower of its kind still remaning in the dioceses of Kilmore. An underground passageway led from the round tower to the abbey/monastery. This tunnel was later closed off so animals would not become trapped inside it.

For those interested in traveling to see Drumlane Abbey, there are a variety of accommodations nearby. The Hotel Kilmore, about three miles from Drumlane, is surrounded by landscaped gardens and lakes, and offers comfortable rooms and an Irish breakfast for about $150 USD per night. Fortview House, seven miles from Drumlane, is a country farmhouse on a beef farm in the lake district. With only five rooms, this will seem like a home away from home for some, at about $200 USD per night including an Irish breakfast.
