Believed to have been built in the 1200s, Dryslwyn Castle is the only castle in Wales that had three wards.

Sitting atop a rocky knoll, while only fragaments of the castle remain today, it once was important to the strategic defense of the country.

Original buildings in Dryslwyn Castle included the round tower/keep, an adjoining ward enclosed by a curtain wall, and a single great hall inside the castle. Outside the castle were small wood buildings located to its east, a small stone building to the south that was probably a kitchen, and another building to the northwest that might have been a prison.

A second ward was added to the castle in the 13th century, doubling Dryslwyn's size, and a new hall was built inside the castle to the east of the great hall. Apartments adjoining the hall were also built, as was a chapel tower and courtyard. By 1287 it was one of the most impressive, massive castles in Welsh history.

Unfortunately, during that same year the English seized Dryslwyn Castle, occupying it for years. It was decommissioned in the 1500s and no longer used as a defensive stronghold. Later, the castle was set on fire, and what tourists see now is what remained.

Tourists who want to see Dryslwyn Castle may stay in nearby Carmarthen, about three miles from the castle, at Cothi Bridge Hotel.
