Dating from the 18th century, Dublin Castle was the seat of government of Irish, then British Rule until 1922. Today, it is still used as a government complex for the Irish Free State. Originally, the castle was built in 1204 as a stragetic fortification for Dublin. It then became a royal residence. The complex has hosted the inauguration of the President of Ireland since 1938. The castle contains a number of State Apartments, including Saint Patrick's Hall, the Throne Room, State Drawing Room, State Dining Room, State Bedrooms, and the State Corridor. Much of Dublin Castle is today used as a conference center. The castle complex is open to the public (except during state functions). Today, Dublin Castle is famous for starring in many movies such as Michael Collins, Becoming Jane, and The Medallion, and in the television series The Tudors, where it was used to portray the Vatican. It is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m and weekends from 2 p.m .to 5 p.m. Adults must pay $6 USD for admission, seniors and students, $4.44 USD, and $2.22 USD for kids 12 and under.
