Duchess Anna Amalia Library, in Weimar, Germany, is home to many important works of German literature and history. Built in 1766 in honor of Anna Amalia, Duchess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, the library includes the Green Castle, the main building which was once the duchess's home and was built before the library in the 1500s; and a Rococo hall holding a portrait of Grand Duke Carl August .

Containing a million books, 2000 historical manuscripts, 600 ancestral registers, 10,000 maps, and 4000 musical scripts, this library is important to not only German heritage but international literature. Special collections here include 10,000 volumes of Shakespeare; the world's largest collection of Faust; the duchess' personal 13,000 volume music collection; and a 16th century Bible associated with Martin Luther.

In 2004, a fire broke out in the Green Castle, damaging the historical building. Much of the library's valuable contents were lost in the fire, including 37 oil paintings and 50,000 books. It reopened in October, 2007.

Today, the library is open to the public for general research and as a tourist attraction.
