Duddingston

The Duddingston is a former village in the east of Edinburgh, Scotland which is next to Holy rood Park. Bonnie Prince Charlie had held a council of war in a cottage in the village shortly before the Battle of Preston pans in 1745. Duddingston Loch has been used for ice-skating and curling and even boasting a Curling House for several centuries. The Kirk which was built on the newly gifted lands went by the name Duddingston Kirk but the name Treverlen survived into the next century as the parish name after being confirmed as such in a list of 13 parishes belonging to Kelso in 1200 which leads one to suspect that there had been a Kirk on the site previously.
The loch provided the setting for Henry Raeburn's painting of The Reverend Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Loch in that time.
The Sheep Heide Inn is said to be one of Scotland's oldest pubs and dating from 1360. It is named after a ram head presented to the landlord by King James VI in 1580. Today the loch is a wildlife reserve and owned by the Scottish Wildlife Trust. It contains a variety of wildfowl and reed beds. Dr Neil’s Garden is a garden in Scotland that is located near Duddingston Village on Duddingston Loch. Andrew and Nancy Neil were awarded the Queen Mother Medal by the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society.
The closest hotel is the Duddingston which starts at 80 Euros per night.
The official web site of the Duddingston is www.duddingston.com\
