A 700-year-old town is bound to have a rich history. Celle, Germany offers just that, and travelers need not look farther than the Duke's Castle.

The Duke's Castle came to be back in 1292, making it the oldest building in Celle. By the 14th century, the Castle became a royal seat. It would be rebuilt over the years to accommodate the varying styles, from Renaissance to Baroque.

Perhaps the Castle's many accolades come with its additions. The structure contains a Renaissance chapel from 1470, the only intact early Protestant court chapel in all of Germany. Aside from the chapel, a palace theater was also placed inside the castle, built in 1675. The theater rests as the oldest theater in Germany still in use today.

Visitors can tour the palace, showcasing the ducal state chambers set to early baroque styles along with a complete palace kitchen from the 18th century. The Duke's Castle glows in pristine white set against lush greenery of the palace gardens.

Visitors to Celle can continue viewing gorgeous architecture by simply wandering the streets of the town. Celle contains over 500 half-timbered homes all from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.
