Said to be the second largest urban park in Brazil, Dunas State Park Journalist Luiz Maria Alves, is more commonly known as “Parque das Dunas.” Founded in 1977, it is the first Environmental Conservation Unit in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Set in the heart of Natal, Rio Grande de Norte’s capital, this legally protected environment covers 1,172 hectares and is visible from nearly anywhere in southern Natal. Drive along Via Costeira for a scenic view, or visit the park to learn about the geological formation of the dunes, park wildlife, and 269 species of flora in the Atlantic Forest. Park admission costs R$1 per person. Visitors to Parque das Dunas can go on guided trekking expeditions on the dunes for a park admission price of R$2, but only small number of visitors are allowed at a time. Dunas State Park Journalist Luiz Maria Alves is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 8am to 6pm.
