Located on Galway Bay's southeastern shore in Kinvara, County Galway, Ireland, Dunguaire Castle dates to 1520, when it was built by the Hynes clan.

During the 1600s, the Martin family took over Dunguaire Castle, until the 1900s when Oliver St. John Gogarty bought it. He began to renovate the castle and established a meeting of Celtic artists and poets there such as W.B. Yeats and George Bernard Shaw. In 1954, Christobel Lady Ampthill bought the castle, completing more restoration work. The present owners, Shannon Development, later bought the castle from her, as it manages other Irish historical attractions.

One of the stories surrounding Dunguaire's Castle says if a person stands at the castle's front gate and asks a question, they will have an answer to their question by the end of the day. This is supposed to be the Lord of the castle's generosity extending into the afterlife.

Today, the castle's 75 foot high tower and defensive wall are still standing. The grounds of Dunguaire Castle are open to tourists from May to September from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Dunguaire Castle Banquet, held from April to October, takes place at 5:45 p.m .and 8 p.m. Reservations are required for the banquet but not just to visit the castle.
