Duomo Messina

Hotels near Duomo Messina, Reggio Calabria, Italy .

Duomo Messina, or Piazza del Duomo, in Messina, Italy, is a Romanesque and Norman cathedral built in 1160 by Roger II. It has been damaged often, such as in the earthquake in 1908 and World War II bombs in 1943. Since that time, Piazza del Duomo has been reconstructed from scratch, keeping some original architectural features.

Reconstruction of the castle's central doorway was done with fragments originally from the 1400s. The lower part of the cathedral's facade is decorated with carvings from the same time period depicting Sicilian agrarian life. Many of the treasures held by the cathedral recreated using fragments taken from the ruins after the war.
Some of the more famous holdings of the cathedral are the statue of John the Baptist, sculpted by Antonello Gagini in 1525. The main altar holds a copy of the Byzantine Madonna della Lettera, the original having been destroyed in 1943. The Cappella del Sacramento in the north apse was designed by Jacopo del Duca, who was Michaelangelo's student. The Cappella del Sacramento holds the cathedral's only original mosaic, a work from the 1300s that shows the Virgin Mary with saints, queens, and archangels.
The Tesoro of the church is where the real valuable contents are, including candlesticks, chalices, and gold reliquaries. The Manta d'Oro, or golden mantle, a special cover for the Virgin and Bambino on the church's altar, is also here.
Piazza del Duomo is open free of charge to the public. Guided tours can be taken, and are offered in English for $6 for adults, and $4.20 for kids under 18 and senior citizens 65 and over. The cathedral is open from October 15 to April 15, Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.; and from April 16 to October 14 from 9 a.m .to 1 p.m .and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Nearby accommodations include the NH Liberty, about half a mile from the cathedral, for $190 USD per night; and the Scilla E Cariddi Bed and Breakfast, two and a half miles from Duomo Messina, for $150 USD per night (including breakfast).
