This Northwest Washington, D.C. district is located in the “Old City” area planned by Architect Pierre Charles L’Enfant. Most of the construction of the area took place following the Civil War, when large mansions were built and statues were commissioned such as the memorial of Samuel Francis Du Pont. Over the years, the neighborhood has grown and changed.

Though it declined significantly following the 1968 Washington riots, Dupont has since become an attraction for those seeking an alternative lifestyle. Today, Dupont Circle has a quite bohemian feel. It has become a popular spot for the gay and lesbian community and is considered a historic part of the development of the American gay identity.

Visitors to the area will enjoy all that Dupont Circle has to offer. Its architecture is outstanding, featuring Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque styles. In Strivers´ section, architecture lovers will especially enjoy its original Edwardian-era residences. Other points of interest in the district include its traffic circle, various embassies and the Phillips Collection (the nation’s first museum of modern art). Those visiting at specific times of the year may come across some of DuPont’s annual events, including Capital Pride and the Dupont Circle High Heel Race.
