Not too many college students have a medieval castle for their classroom or dormitory. Most are put in tiny cubicle-like housing or take classes in new age structure. That however is not the case at Durham University in the United Kingdom where the Durham Castle stands as a part of the university's campus.

Constructed in 1072, the Durham Castle was a commission by William the Conqueror. He wanted the structure to defend the peninsula by the meander in the River Wear. Changes have been made to the Norman castle over the years, from the addition of a chapel in 1540 to present restorations of its structure.

The site would go on to house the Bishops of Durham, whom eventually gave the Castle to Durham University when was founded in 1832. Today, it houses over 100 students.

Visitors to the town of Durham can tour the Durham Castle, but only through a guided visit. Tours are available in the afternoons during term time and throughout all mornings when the University is on vacation. The Castle also hosts wedding receptions, banquets, and conferences.
