Hotels near Durham Cathedral, Durham, United Kingdom .

Durham Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham, is located in Durham, England, and is the seat of the Anglican Bishop of Durham. The present cathedral was founded in 1093 and is known worldwide as a great example of Norman architecture. It has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cathedral was voted as England's favorite building in a 2001 BBC poll.

The treasures contained within Durham Cathedral include relics of St Cuthbert, the head of St Oswald of Northumbria and the remains of the Venerable Bede. The central tower of the cathedral stands 217 feet high and offers breathtaking views of Durham and the surrounding area.

Usually the cathedral is open daily to visitors, except when special services or events are being held. It's best to check with the cathedral office first to make sure it's open the day you wish to visit. Admission is free; however, the church asks for a donation towards the daily running costs of the Cathedral.

Accommodations nearby for those wishing to visit Durham Cathedral include the Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County, about half a mile from the cathedral in a beautiful historic setting for about $215 USD per night; or Fallen Angel, a half mile from the cathedral, an old Georgian townhouse with 10 rooms for $250 USD per night, including breakfast.
