DuSable Museum of African American History

Hotels near DuSable Museum of African American History, Chicago, United States .

More than just Chicago's foremost museum dedicated to making sure the history of African-Americans in the city is documented and accessible to the public, The DuSable Museum of African American History is also the first and oldest museum in the country with the sole purpose of conserving African-American history and culture, as well as art.

The museum itself has grown significantly since its opening in 1961, when it was actually located in its founder's home. Now, The DuSable Museum of African American History has multiple wings and a comfortable and spacious home in the Washington Park neighborhood of Chicago's South Side.

Visitors to Chicago interested in paying attention to some of the most important facets of American history that sometimes don't quite make the other museums and books simply must come visit here. In addition to the museum's extensive permanent collection, with rare personal effects from Ida B. Wells, Paul Laurence Dunbar, W.E. B. Du Bois, and Harriet Tubman, there's always an exciting visiting exhibit on, too. From American Comedy to The Blues in Bronzeville, the temporary exhibitions are just as interesting and important as the history found through the permanent collection.

Visitors to Chicago can explore The DuSable Museum of African American History Tuesday through Saturday from ten in the morning until five in the afternoon, and also on Sundays, from noon until five. In addition to the museum, there's often a musical or lecture series on, so check before visiting to see what special events coincide with your visit.

A number of hotels are a short distance away, including The Wooded Isle Suites, The Ramada Lake Shore Chicago, and The Hudson Hotel.
