Düsseltal

Düsseltal is a borough of Düsseldorf with a fairly well off population and developed around an old convent in the area. It is also well known as Düsseldorf Zoo because until 1943 there was a zoological garden in Düsseltal. The word Düsseltal is German known as the valley of the river Düssel.
Düsseltal neighboring boroughs go clockwise from the north: Rath, Grafenberg, Flingern, and Derendorf. It is also borders the railway line Düsseldorf-Duisburg and the Grafenberg forest.
Düsseltal makes up an area of 2.98 km2 and has a population of 23,219.
During the Industrial Revolution the factory known as Haniel & Lueg was built in Düsseltal and the town hosted an international industrial exhibition in 1880 with more than 3,000 companies exhibiting in more than 100 halls which is one of the best know exhibits. It was opened by Emperor William II in that time.
The zoological garden was initiated by the zoologist Alfred Brehm and was founded in 1876. Opening was in 1876 but during air raids in 1943 it was completely destroyed. After World War II Düsseltal became rapidly exclusive borough of Düsseldorf.
Düsseltal is home to the Dusseldorger EG and today known as DEG Metro Stars which is an ice hockey club that has had lots of success and among them six German championships. The Zoo Park surrounds the Ice Stadium on Brehmstraße where they played until 2006. Since DEL-Season 06/07 they play in the multipurpose indoor arena ISS Dome. Another building of interest is the Catholic Paulus Church which was built in neoclassicist style.
