Duthie Park
Duthie Park is a park situated in Aberdeen, Scotland, by the banks of the River Dee, stretching to 44 acres (180,000 m2) of land gifted to the council by Lady Elizabeth Duthie of Ruthrieston in 1881, in memory of her uncle and brother. Duthie Park was designed by the surveyor and architect Mr. William R. McKelvie of Dundee.
The park well known for the David Welch winter gardens with tropical and arid houses which contain the second largest collections of bromeliads and of giant cacti in Great Britain (after the Eden Project in Cornwall, England). It was firstly opened in 1899, but the greenhouses had to be demolished and rebuilt after storm damage in 1969. Other important and worth to be seen places in Duthie Park are: the Victorian corridor, The Japanese Gardens which were opened in June 1987 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Hiroshima; The Rose Mountain which displays over 120 000 roses in the summer or the Victorian Band Stand.
Other places to enjoy at Duthie Park after admiring the gardens are: boating ponds and a pond for sailing model yachts and remote controlled boats, children playgrounds, at the rear of the park there are tennis courts and a bowling green, a swan pond donated by Miss Duthie. There’s also a restaurant here where people can enjoy a hot tea or have lunch. The park often hosts social and cultural events like fund raising, sport events, children parties or art exhibitions.
Local accommodation is available at hotels like Holiday Inn Aberdeen-west Hotel, Carmelite Hotel or Aberdeen Douglas Hotel with prices starting from 60 Euros.
