The Edinburgh Festival Theatre is a performing arts venue located on Nicolson Street in Edinburgh, Scotland used mainly for performances of opera and ballet, large-scale musical events, and touring groups. After its most recent renovation in 1994, it has a capacity of 1,915 seats.
The Festival Theatre on Nicolson Street opened in 1994 and has established its position as one of the country’s most esteemed venues beeing described by the New York Times as “the finest theatre in Europe”. It is the Edinburgh’s arena for Scottish Opera and Scottish Ballet and is the heart of the Edinburgh International Festival. The Theatre offers a contemporary dance season, alongside large-scale musicals, international ballet companies and a variety of one night musical and comedy events.
The present theatre’s location is Edinburgh’s longest continuous theatre site, as there has been a theatre in this particular location since 1830. From being Dunedin Hall, the Royal Amphitheatre, Alhambra Music Hall, the Queen’s Theatre and Newsome’s Circus, the site transformed into the Empire Palace Theatre, the first of the famous Moss Empires’ chain, opening on 7 November 1892. In addition to the music hall and popular entertainers who performed at the Empire, the theatre became a main venue of the Edinburgh International Festival between 1947 and 1963. Theatre re-opened in June 1994 with a glass-fronted structure for the new entrance, as the now-renamed Edinburgh Festival Theatre.

The venue cannot be missed as visitors walk up Nicholson Street, with its huge glass facade, through which theatre and concert goers can be seen swanning around.
