Edinburgh Waverley railway station, popularly known as Waverly, is the most important railway station in Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. It covers a total area of 25 acres in the centre of the city and is the second-largest main line railway station in the United Kingdom in terms of area. It is the terminus of the Edinburgh branch of the West Coast Main Line. Waverly is the second biggest railway station in Scotland in terms of multitude of traffic. The station consists of 18 platforms in total and over 16 million of traffic was recorded in the year 2007-2008 for this station.
The station was opened in the year 1846 for the first time. Later some re building work was done during 1892-1900. There were various reimbursements that were taken care of for the years but the station still carries signs of its past specially in the domed ceiling where wreathed cherubs leap between a wealth of scrolled ironwork. The railway station is considered to be a memorial of North British war.
Train lines leave from here in two directions basically: Eastbound and Westbound. The former is opened up to Newcraighall whereas the later connects places like Princess Street Gardens, Glasgow Queen Street, Glasgow Central, Bathgate etc. Local buses and coach services can be availed from the Waverly Bridge. The North British Hotel is in adjacency with the station. National Gallery of Scotland is within a Kilometer from the station. Plenty of fantastic hotels like Hanover, Braid Hills, Herald House and Osborne Hotel are nearby as well.
