Edward Waters College

Hotels near Edward Waters College, Jacksonville (Florida), United States .

Jacksonville has a surprisingly higher number of secondary educational institutions, many of which have rich histories. One of the most important is Edward Waters College, a private college located close to many of the city's biggest downtown attractions.

Edward Waters College is particularly significant because of its rich history in providing education for African-Americans, starting right after The Civil War, when the college was founded expressly for the purpose of educating recently freed slaves. It is also the oldest black college in Florida.

Founded officially in 1866, the oldest building that is a part of today's campus dates to the 1910s. Many of the original buildings were lost in Jacksonville's Great Fire of 1904. Edward Waters College offers four-year bachelor's degrees, and has a number of alumni famous to those from both the Jacksonville region and beyond, including famous writers, actors, senators, and sheriffs.

A number of hotels are relatively close to Edward Waters College, including The Super 8 Central, The Red Roof Inn, and The Omni Jacksonville Hotel.
