Ehrenfeld is a borough in the City of Cologne in Germany and includes the seven quarters of Bickendorf, Bocklemünd, Mengenich, Ehrenfeld, Neuehrenfeld, Ossendorf, and Vogel sang. It has about 103,890 inhabitants and covers an area of 23.83 square kilometers. Ehrenfeld got its name from the quarter Ehrenfeld which represents the center of the borough for the area. Ehrenfeld became a municipality in 1867 and a city in the year 1879. Nine years later Ehrenfeld became part of the city of Cologne.
Ehrenfeld is characterized by spunky and popular residential areas and shopping streets. The media center Colonia with the most modern production and movie studios and a large and vivacious free cultural scene with many artists' studios, theatres, and clubs.
The landmark of Ehrenfeld is the well known Helios-lighthouse. German cinema dates back to the early years of the medium with the work of Max Skladanowsky. It was particularly influential during the years of the Weimar Republic and with German expressionists such as Robert Wien and Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. Austrian-based director Fritz Lang which became a German citizen in 1926 and whose career flourished in the pre war German film industry is said to have been a major influence on Hollywood cinema. His silent movie Metropolis in 1927 is referred to as the birth of modern Science Fiction movies.
The borough is connected to the city center of Cologne by tram numbers 3, 4, 5, and 13 of the Cologne Stadtbahn. The Bundesautobahn 57 connects Ehrenfeld with the Cologne Ring area. The railway station Ehrenfeld connects the borough to the regional rail network.
