Eiffel Tower

Hotels near Eiffel Tower, Paris, France .

The Eiffel Tower (or Tour Eiffel in French) stands in Paris, France as one of the most famous structures in the world. Built for the Paris Exposition of 1889 by Gustave Eiffel, it is the tallest building in Paris and receives more paying visitors each year than any other monument in the world.

Built to celebrate the scientific and engineering achievements of the time, at 1063 feet tall, the Eiffel Tower was at one time the tallest structure in the entire world (until the Chrysler Building in New York City was built in 1930). It is the second tallest building in France (the Millau Viaduct is the tallest). Made of steel, the tower weight 10,000 tons. It stands as the most prominent symbol of Paris and of France.

When it was first built, some nature lovers objected, fearing it would interfere with the flight of birds over Paris. It was almost torn down in 1909, when the first 20 year lease expired, but was saved because its antenna was used for telegraphing at the time. In 1910 it became part of the International Time Service. Since 1918, French radio has made use of the Eiffel Tower, as has French television (since 1957).

Visitors can visit three levels of the tower, using stairs or elevators. The walk to the first level is 300 steps, and the walk from the first to second level is an additional 300 steps. The third level, at the very pinnacle of the Eiffel Tower, can only be reached via elevator. Restaurants are located on the first and second levels.

The Eiffel Tower is open every day of the year. From January 1 through June 12, the elevator runs from 9:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the stairs are available from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. From June 13 through August 31, elevator and stairs are both accessible from 9 a.m .to midnight. From September 1 to December 31, the elevator may be used between 9:30 a.m. and 11 p.m., and the stairs from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

If you wish to travel by elevator to the first floor, it costs $7 USD for adults, and $3.70 for children under 12. By elevator to the second floor is $11.55 USD for adults, and 6.37 for children under 12. Elevator travel to the top floor (the third floor) costs adults $17 USD and children under 12 $9 USD. If you prefer traveling by stairs; up to the second floor, adults 25 and over pay $6 USD, and under age 25 pays $4.50. Children under 3 are free going via the stairs.
