Eijsden Railway Station
Eijsden Railway Station was the southernmost railway station in the Netherlands. The station was located in-between Liege-Guillemins (Belgium) and Maastricht (Netherlands). The station was closed in the year 2006 after running for more than 140 years (The station was opened in the year 1861). The number of tracks passing through the station was two during the time of closure.
In the final years of its existence, trains from National Railway Company of Belgium used to halt in this station. During that time, Nederland Spoorwegen no longer used this station. The time when the National Railway Company of Belgium (NRCB) extended the intercity line between Brussels-South and Liege-Guillemins up to Maastricht, the general local railway service between Maastricht and Liege-Guillemins was halted and that too permanently. The Intercity trains were very long and it was not possible to halt them in Eijsden, so the Eijsden railway station was closed by the railway authorities. Due to some electricity related problem (Different current voltages used in the Netherlands and Belgium), it was getting costly as well to run the station. After the closure, a committee named “Return the Train to Eijsden” was formed by the local residents in an aim to restart the train services.
There are plenty of famed hotels near the disused station like Hotel Le Bonheur Eijsden, Restaurant Hotel De Maastol Eijsden and Hotel Onder De Panne Eijsden. After the closure, a new bus line was also opened between Maastricht and the railway station in Vise, Belgium to serve the residents of Eijsden.
