‘Eindhoven University of Technology’ is known in Dutch as ‘Technische Universiteit Eindhoven’ (TU/e). Its former name is ‘Technische Hogeschool Eindhoven’, in short THE) and it is a technology university. The university’s motto is ‘Mind over matter’ (Mens agitat molem). The government laid the foundation stone of the University on 15th June 1956. The other institution that is of a similar cadre is ‘Delft University of Technology’. The actual location of the campus is central Eindhoven that is at the north side of central station.
Several patents have originated from this institution; many scientific publications too are also produced here. The neighbourhood of the campus has many technology companies that pursue active research. Some of the companies are DAF, ASML and Philips. The companies have active contacts with the University. The University’s 50th year celebrations were held during 2006.
The European Commission stated in 2003 that the University was ranked third of the research universities located in Europe with respect to research activities. It ranked 74 in the list of universities around the world. During 2006, it climbed up the rankings to reach the 67th spot. It has collaborations with other international universities, one such being with China’s Zhejiang University.
Some of the university’ departments are Mathematics & Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Architecture, and Bio-medical Engineering. The University has produced many notable architects and scientists who even head companies.
