Located in Marrakech, Morocco, El Badi Palace was built in 1578 by the Saadian king Ahmad al-Mansur. Its name means “the incomparable palace,” which it was indeed at one time, with 360 rooms, a large courtyard and pool decorated with Italian marbles and gold, and a small, tunnel-like jail. The main hall was named the Koubba el Khamsiniyya, with 50 grand marble columns. At one time El Badi Palace was a playground for Saadian princes and visiting diplomats.

This elaborate complex took 25 years to build. It was ransacked by the Alaouite Sultan Mawlay Ismail, who used the materials to decorate his own palace in Meknes.

Visitors today come to the sandstone ruins of El Badi Palace and can climb up to the ramparts on the roof and watch storks feed their young in their nests. In the south of the palace, tourists can walk around the dungeons and corridors. Also on display is a collection of goods from the Minbar of the Koutoubia Mosque Once a year, in May, the Moroccan folklore festival is held here.

The El Badi Palace is open to tourists daily from 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. It costs just $1.30 USD to tour the palace, and $2.60 for the palace tour and to view the display of the Koutoubia Mosque Minbar.
