El Canuelo, also known as Fortin San Juan de la Cruz, is a member of the registry of National Historic Sites in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Located on the Isla de Cabras, this military fort was constructed out of wood in 1610 to guard the entrance to the Bayamon River. It also lies at a strategic point for crossfire for any unwanted ships which entered the bay. The fort played a key role in the protection of Puerto Rico from a Dutch attack, during which it was burnt down. It was later rebuilt, however, by the Spanish in the 1670s. Another historically significant moment in the history of El Canuelo was its bombardment by the U.S. Navy during the Spanish-American War.
